PROCTORING POLICY

Long-distance learning programs and some professions provide opportunities for independent study on the condition that exams are proctored. The Main Branch of the Upper Darby Township and Sellers Memorial Free Public Libraries offers proctoring of exams in support of its mission to support lifelong learning and personal growth. Service is provided subject to the limits and restrictions outlined below.

FACILITIES AND TIMES

  • Location: Students may have exams proctored at the Main Library (76 S. State Rd.); proctoring at the Municipal and Primos Branches is done at the discretion of the Branch Directors. Regardless of location, all proctoring is subject to the procedures outlined in this policy.

  • The Library does not have a quiet room. Students taking tests share space with other patrons using study carrels and tables.

  • Time: We will proctor exams Monday through Friday (9 a.m. until 5 p.m.) or at other times determined at the discretion of the proctor. However, we encourage students to take their tests before 2:00 p.m., when the number of patrons using the library begins to steadily increase.

  • This is not one-on-one proctoring. Testing is done as close to the Reference Desk as possible while the librarian performs regular duties. These responsibilities will often require the librarian to leave the immediate Reference Desk area.

  • Public computers are available with advance notice for online testing.

  • The Library cannot assume responsibility for tests that are cancelled or interrupted by building emergencies, closings, power failures, or computer software or hardware failures.

PROCEDURES

  • Circulation desk staff will refer all inquiries about proctoring exams to the reference librarian. If that librarian will not be available to proctor at the requested time, s/he will confer with another reference librarian before a definite appointment is made.

  • The proctor will:

    ■ Check the photo identification of the student at the time of the test.

    ■ Follow only the instructions provided by the academic institution.

    ■ Reserve a public computer if needed and extend the time.

    ■ Administer the test without assistance or interpretation of instructions for the student.

    ■ Promptly prepare the materials for return to the institution, with costs paid by the student or school. (Completed tests will be picked up on the next library business day or at the next scheduled pick-up time of the designated carrier.

    ■ Fax test results to toll-free numbers if that is the procedure requested by the academic institution.

  • The Library will discard or return exams held over one month.

  • The Library will not retain copies of tests but may file a record of the following for three months: name of proctor, name of student, date and time of the test.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

It is the student's responsibility to:

  • Make an appointment in advance to take the test.

  • Make arrangements for the test to arrive at the Library in time for the appointment.

  • Confirm that the test has arrived and follow up with the school if it has not.

  • Confirm in advance that the Library's computer resources are adequate for the test requirements.

  • Bring photo identification and stationery supplies, calculators, etc.

  • Be on time. If a student arrives late, a new appointment might be required depending on the length of the exam and the proctor's schedule.

  • Provide a return envelope and adequate postage for the test if this has not been provided by the academic institution.

  • Follow the posted Patron Behavior Policy.
